The Bubur Suro Festival as a Model of Eco-Islamic Education in the Coastal Area of Pekalongan

Coastal communities in Indonesia face increasingly complex environmental challenges. In this context, local traditions may provide culturally embedded spaces for environmental learning. This study examines the Bubur Suro Festival in Krapyak, Pekalongan, as a model of Eco-Islamic education in a coastal community. Employing a qualitative case study approach, data were collected through participant observation, semi-structured in-depth interviews, and documentation conducted before, during, and after the 2025 festival. Participants included festival organizers, religious and community leaders, women involved in Bubur Suro preparation, youth, local entrepreneurs, visitors, and government representatives. The findings reveal three interconnected patterns. First, the festival transmits Eco-Islamic values through embodied cultural participation. Second, coastal ecological experiences, particularly tidal flooding, are transformed into collective ecological awareness and environmentally responsible practices. Third, the festival generates a circular Community-Based Eco-Islamic Pedagogy linking Islamic spirituality, local cultural meaning, community solidarity, ecological experience, environmental practice, and intergenerational continuity. The study contributes to Islamic education by repositioning local wisdom as cultural infrastructure for environmental learning beyond formal classrooms. It implies that Islamic educational institutions, communities, and local governments can develop context-sensitive environmental education by integrating religious values with living traditions and local ecological knowledge.
